The first step to closing your pool is to check the water chemical balance. The proper chemical balance will keep your pool from developing heavy calcium deposits or the water becoming too corrosive. The pool pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6. Calcium levels should be between 175 and 225 parts per million (ppm). The chlorine level should be between 1 to 4 ppm.
The second step to closing your pool is to clean and store pool equipment. Remove, clean and store pool ladders, diving boards and other pool accessories. Clean pool walls and floor with a pool brush, use a skimmer to remove debris from the water and clean the skimmer baskets. Next, add an algaecide to prevent growth of algae of the pool walls and floor. After, the pool is clean the pool filtration system will need to be cleaned.
Finally, it will be time to drain the pool’s water level. Shut off the filter pump, drain all equipment and store away for the winter. Install and secure a cover over the pool.
